Dry/irritated throat, hoarseness, voice changes, coughing, or diarrhea may occur. A bad taste in the mouth or nosebleeds may also occur. If any of these effects persist or worsen, notify your doctor or pharmacist promptly.

Remember that your doctor has prescribed this medication because he or she has judged that the benefit to you is greater than the risk of side effects. Many people using this medication do not have serious side effects.

Tell your doctor immediately if any of these unlikely but serious side effects occur:

  • white patches in your mouth or on your tongue
  • ear pain
  • eye redness/itching
  • increased thirst/urination
  • swelling of the feet/ankles
  • easy bruising/bleeding
  • chest pain
  • mental/mood changes (e.g., hyperactivity, mood swings)
  • bone pain/breakage
  • muscle/joint pain
  • puffy face
  • slow wound healing
  • vision changes


Infrequently, this medication may cause severe sudden worsening of breathing problems/asthma immediately after use. If you have sudden worsening of breathing, use your quick-relief inhaler and seek immediate medical attention.

A very serious allergic reaction to this drug is unlikely, but seek immediate medical attention if it occurs. Symptoms of a serious allergic reaction may include:

  • rash
  • itching
  • swelling
  • severe dizziness
  • trouble breathing
