Seek immediate medical attention if any of these rare but very serious side effects occur:
- easy bruising/bleeding
- blood in the urine
- black/bloody stools
- vomit that looks like coffee grounds
- stomach/abdominal pain
- chest pain
- jaw/left arm pain
- mouth sores
- sore throat
- painful swallowing
- heartburn
- pain/redness/swelling of the arms/legs
This medication can lower the body's ability to fight an infection. Notify your doctor promptly if you develop any signs of an infection such as fever, chills or persistent sore throat.
A very serious allergic reaction to this drug is unlikely, but seek immediate medical attention if it occurs. Symptoms of a serious allergic reaction may include:
- rash
- itching/swelling (especially of the face/tongue/throat)
- severe dizziness
- trouble breathing
Fluorouracil can commonly cause a rash that is usually not serious. However, you may not be able to tell it apart from a rare rash that could be a sign of a severe reaction. Therefore, seek immediate medical attention if you develop a rash.

Fluorouracil IV Precautions
Before taking fluorouracil, tell your doctor or pharmacist if you are allergic to it; or if you have any other allergies. This product may contain inactive ingredients, which can cause allergic reactions or other problems. Talk to your pharmacist for more details.
This medication should not be used if you have certain medical conditions. Before using this medicine, consult your doctor or pharmacist if you have:
- poor nutrition
- decreased bone marrow function/blood cell disorders (e.g., anemia, leukopenia, thrombocytopenia)
- a serious infection
