Humatin Oral

Generic Name: PAROMOMYCIN - ORAL
Pronounced: (PAIR-oh-mow-MY-sin)

Humatin Oral Uses

This medication is used to treat a certain parasite infection of the intestines (amebiasis). Paromomycin belongs to a class of drugs known as aminoglycoside antibiotics. It works by killing the parasites that cause the infection. This medication is poorly absorbed into the blood and does not work for infections outside of the intestines.

Paromomycin is also used along with a special diet to treat a certain serious brain problem (hepatic encephalopathy). This condition is caused by too much of a certain natural substance (ammonia). Normally, the liver gets rid of ammonia, but liver disease can cause too much ammonia to remain in the body. This medication kills certain normal intestinal bacteria that make ammonia, thereby lowering ammonia levels and decreasing the encephalopathy.

How To Use Humatin Oral

Take this medication by mouth with meals, usually 3 times daily or exactly as directed by your doctor. Higher doses may be divided into 6 daily doses depending on your condition. Taking this medication with food decreases stomach side effects.

Dosage is based on your medical condition and response to treatment. The length of treatment is usually 5 to 10 days for infections, but may be longer depending on what kind of infection you have. Treatment of hepatic encephalopathy may last for 5 to 6 days at a time.

This medication works best when the amount of drug in your body is kept at a constant level. Therefore, use this drug at evenly spaced intervals. To help you remember, use it at the same times each day.

Do not use more or less of this drug than prescribed unless directed to do so by your doctor. Do not stop this medication before you complete the prescribed time for treatment, even if you feel better. Skipping, changing your dose, or not completing the whole treatment course without approval from your doctor may cause the infection to get worse or make the infection more difficult to treat (resistant).

Tell your doctor immediately if your infection symptoms return (e.g., diarrhea, cramping, severe tiredness, fever) while using this medication or after stopping it.
