Aventyl Oral Interactions

Your healthcare professionals (e.g., doctor or pharmacist) may already be aware of any possible drug interactions and may be monitoring you for it. Do not start, stop or change the dosage of any medicine before checking with them first.

This drug should not be used with the following medications because very serious (possibly fatal) interactions may occur:

  • arbutamine
  • sibutramine
  • iomeprol
  • lumefantrine
  • MAO inhibitors (e.g., furazolidone, isocarboxazid, linezolid, moclobemide, phenelzine, procarbazine, rasagiline, selegiline, tranylcypromine)


Avoid taking MAO inhibitors within 2 weeks before and after treatment with this medication. In some cases a serious, possibly fatal drug interaction may occur.

If you are currently using any of these medications listed above, tell your doctor or pharmacist before starting nortriptyline.

Many drugs besides nortriptyline may affect the heart rhythm (QT prolongation), including amiodarone, dofetilide, pimozide, procainamide, quinidine, sotalol, macrolide antibiotics (such as erythromycin), cisapride, halofantrine, disopyramide, among others. Therefore, before using this nortriptyline, report all medications you are currently using to your doctor or pharmacist.

Before using this medication, tell your doctor or pharmacist of all prescription and nonprescription/herbal products you may use, especially of:

  • alcohol
  • amprenavir/fosamprenavir
  • duloxetine
  • clonidine
  • ethchlorvynol
  • guanadrel
  • guanethidine
  • levodopa
  • warfarin
  • barbiturates (e.g., phenobarbital)
  • cimetidine
  • drugs for heart rhythm (e.g., flecainide, propafenone)
  • phenothiazines (e.g., chlorpromazine)
  • SSRI antidepressants (e.g., citalopram, fluvoxamine, sertraline, fluoxetine)
  • stimulants (e.g., amphetamines, methylphenidate)
  • certain sympathomimetics (e.g., albuterol, epinephrine, phenylephrine)
  • St John's wort
  • terbinafine
  • reserpine
  • thyroid supplements
  • disulfiram


If you have been taking fluoxetine, wait at least 5 weeks before starting nortriptyline.
