Your doctor or pharmacist may already be aware of any possible drug interactions and may be monitoring you for them. Do not start, stop, or change the dosage of any medicine before checking with your doctor or pharmacist first.

This drug should not be used with the following medication because very serious interactions may occur:

  • penicillamine


If you are currently using the medication listed above, tell your doctor or pharmacist before starting halofantrine.

Many drugs besides halofantrine may affect the heart rhythm (QT prolongation), including amiodarone, dofetilide, pimozide, procainamide, quinidine, sotalol, macrolide antibiotics (such as erythromycin), posaconazole, cisapride, bepridil, ranolazine, mibefradil, mefloquine, chloroquine, amitriptyline, and ziprasidone, among others. Therefore, before using halofantrine, report all medications you are currently using to your doctor or pharmacist.

Before using this medication, tell your doctor or pharmacist of all prescription and nonprescription/herbal products you may use, especially of :

  • medications that may possibly decrease how the body eliminates halofantrine (e.g., ketoconazole, nefazodone, clarithromycin, among others)
