Tenofovir Disoproxil Fumarate Oral Interactions
Your healthcare professionals (e.g., doctor or pharmacist) may already be aware of any possible drug interactions and may be monitoring you for it. Do not start, stop or change the dosage of any medicine before checking with them first.
This drug should not be used with the following medication because very serious interactions may occur:
- adefovir
If you are currently using the medication listed above, tell your doctor or pharmacist before starting tenofovir.
Before using this medication, tell your doctor or pharmacist of all prescription and nonprescription/herbal products you may use, especially of:
- lopinavir/ritonavir
- atazanavir
- didanosine
Some drugs may also change the way your body gets rid of tenofovir (e.g., cidofovir, acyclovir, valacyclovir, ganciclovir, valganciclovir). If you are currently using any of these medications listed above, tell your doctor or pharmacist before starting tenofovir.
Some HIV medications contain 2 different drugs in 1 product. Tenofovir is often used in such combinations. Check the labels of all your medications to see if they contain tenofovir. Do not take 2 medications that both contain tenofovir without checking with your doctor first.
If you are taking medications that can cause kidney problems (e.g., amphotericin B, vancomycin, cyclosporine, nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs such as ibuprofen or naproxen), you may be at higher risk for having kidney problems (including kidney failure) from tenofovir. Consult your doctor or pharmacist for other drugs that can cause kidney problems. You may also need to have kidney tests done more often to monitor for problems.
This document does not contain all possible interactions. Therefore, before using this product, tell your doctor or pharmacist of all the products you use. Keep a list of all your medications with you, and share the list with your doctor and pharmacist.
