Generic Name: NIFEDIPINE - ORAL
Pronounced: (nye-FED-eh-peen)

Adalat Oral Side Effects

Dizziness, flushing, headache, nausea, heartburn, muscle cramps, and blurred vision may occur as your body adjusts to the medication. To minimize dizziness and lightheadedness, get up slowly when rising from a seated or lying position. If any of these effects persist or worsen, notify your doctor or pharmacist promptly.

Remember that your doctor has prescribed this medication because he or she has judged that the benefit to you is greater than the risk of side effects. Many people using this medication do not have serious side effects. Tell your doctor immediately if any of these unlikely but serious side effects occur:

  • swelling of the ankles/feet
  • shortness of breath
  • tingling of the hands/feet
  • sexual problems
  • unusual weakness or tiredness
  • leg/muscle cramps
  • mental/mood changes
  • swollen or sore joints
  • increased urination


Tell your doctor immediately if any of these rare but very serious side effects occur:

  • fast/slow/irregular heartbeat
  • fainting
  • yellowing of the skin/eyes
  • dark urine
  • severe stomach/abdominal pain
  • persistent nausea/vomiting
  • easy bruising/bleeding
  • signs of infection (e.g., fever, chills, persistent sore throat)
  • black/bloody stools
  • vomit that looks like coffee grounds
  • burning/pain/redness/sweating of feet or hands


A very serious allergic reaction to this drug is unlikely, but seek immediate medical attention if it occurs. Symptoms of a serious allergic reaction include:

  • rash
  • itching
  • swelling of lips/face/throat
  • severe dizziness
  • severe trouble breathing
