Juniors Meggie and Holly Smith (no relation) have been named to the 2007 University Athletic Association Women’s Tennis All-Association Team.
Together, the pair was named First Team All-UAA at second doubles, while Meggie Smith was also named Second Team at third singles.
The UAA honors its top 12 singles performers and its top six doubles teams.
As doubles teammates, the Violet pair accumulated a 9-2 record over the course of the season. The duo went 3-0 when faced against regionally ranked opponents and capped off the campaign by winning all three of matches at the UAA Championship. The pair helped lead the Violets to a fourth-place finish in the tournament, tied for NYU’s best finish ever.
Meggie Smith, a native of Knoxville, Tennessee, had a stellar individual season to go along with her doubles play. She finished the 2006-07 campaign with a record of 9-10, winning seven of her last 10 matches. Smith was one of only two Violets to defeat a regionally ranked opponent in singles this season. She capped off her award-winning season by defeating University of Chicago’s Ade Omodele-Lucien 6-4, 6-0 in the UAA Championship Third-Place Match.
Meggie was selected as the team’s MVP as a freshman, while Holly (Troy, Michigan) was a team member for the first time after transferring from Division I University of Detroit-Mercy.
The Violets finished with an overall 10-7 match record in ’06-07.
