Droperidol Inj Warning
Infrequently, very serious (sometimes fatal) irregular heart rhythm problems (QT prolongation in the EKG, torsades de pointes) have occurred with droperidol use. These problems have occurred at or below recommended doses and also in patients with no known risk factors for heart rhythm problems.
Because of this serious side effect, droperidol should be given only to patients who have not had relief of nausea and vomiting with other drugs or who have experienced side effects with other anti-nausea medications. Do not use droperidol if you have known or suspected QT prolongation in the EKG or long QT syndrome. This medication should be used with caution if you have risk factors for developing QT prolongation (e.g., heart failure, slow heartbeat, an enlarged heart, low blood levels of potassium or magnesium). If you are elderly or use alcohol heavily, you may be at greater risk. Certain medications also increase your risk. See also Drug Interactions.
Before treatment with droperidol, EKG testing should be performed to check if you have a prolonged QT interval. If you do, this drug should not be given. If you do not have a prolonged QT interval and your doctor judges that the benefits of treatment with droperidol are greater than the risks, then EKG testing should be continued for 2-3 hours after the end of treatment to monitor for irregular heart rhythms. Tell your doctor immediately if you develop severe dizziness, fainting, fast/irregular heartbeat, or chest pain.
