Abacavir-Lamivudine-Zidovudine Oral Warning
This combination medication contains 3 drugs (abacavir sulfate, lamivudine, and zidovudine). It should be used only by people who would normally be using all 3 medications.
In some patients, the abacavir in this product has caused a serious (sometimes fatal) allergic reaction after the drug is restarted or continued. Symptoms may include any of the following: fever, rash, tiredness, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, stomach pain, muscle aches, sore throat, mouth sores, swollen glands (lymph nodes), cough, breathing problems. You may still have an allergic reaction to abacavir even if you do not have a rash. If you experience any of these symptoms, contact your doctor immediately. If you have stopped taking abacavir because of an allergic reaction, you must never take any form of abacavir again. Notify all of your doctors and pharmacists if you have stopped taking abacavir due to an allergic reaction. Read the warning card provided with this medication for more details.
The zidovudine in this product has caused severe blood problems, including a decrease in red blood cells (anemia) and white blood cells (neutropenia). This occurs more frequently in people with advanced HIV disease (AIDS). Seek immediate medical attention if you develop signs of anemia (new/severe tiredness, breathing problems, weakness, bluish fingernails/lips, pale skin, fast heartbeat). Low white blood cells can make you more likely to get serious (sometimes fatal) infections. Seek immediate medical attention if you develop a new fever, chills, cough, breathing problems, loss of appetite, weight loss, new diarrhea, sore throat.
Zidovudine may also cause muscle problems (myopathy). Seek immediate medical attention if you develop symptoms of myopathy such as a decrease in muscle size (wasting), muscle weakness/pain/tenderness.
Rarely, abacavir/lamivudine/zidovudine has caused a severe (sometimes fatal) liver and blood problem (lactic acidosis). Immediately tell your doctor if you develop symptoms of liver problems (e.g., persistent nausea, stomach/abdominal pain, dark urine, yellowing eyes/skin) or lactic acidosis (e.g., rapid breathing, drowsiness, muscle aches).
