Drotrecogin alfa (Activated) IV Uses
Drotrecogin alfa is a man-made form of a natural enzyme in
your body called activated protein C, which helps to decrease clotting and
swelling (inflammation) in the blood vessels. This medication is used to
improve the chance of survival in patients with severe and life-threatening
infections of the blood (severe sepsis with organ failure).
This drug is not recommended for use in
children.
How To Use Drotrecogin alfa (Activated) IV
This medication is given by injection into a vein by a
health care professional. Learn all preparation and usage instructions for this
product. Follow all instructions for proper mixing and dilution with the
correct IV fluid. Before using, check this product visually for particles or
discoloration. If either is present, do not use the liquid. Do not shake the
drug when preparing, transporting, or using the medication. If you have
questions about the preparation or use of this medication, consult the doctor
or pharmacist.
Dosage is based on your weight. The medication should be
given for a total of 96 hours (4 days).
