Phenobarbital Oral Uses
This medication is used alone or with other medications to control certain types of seizure problems (e.g., grand mal and partial seizures). Controlling seizures helps prevent injury from falling and allows you to lead a more normal life. Phenobarbital belongs to a class of drugs known as barbiturate anticonvulsants/hypnotics. It works by controlling the abnormal electrical activity in the brain that occurs during a seizure. This medication is also used for a short time (2-4 weeks) to help calm you during periods of anxiety. It works for anxiety by affecting certain parts of the brain to cause calming.
How To Use Phenobarbital Oral
Take this medication by mouth with or without food, usually 1-3 times daily or as directed by your doctor. If you are taking the elixir, carefully measure your dose using a medication-measuring device or spoon. Do not use a household spoon. Dosage is based on your age, medical condition, phenobarbital blood levels, and response to therapy.
It may take several weeks before the medication controls your seizures. This medication works best when the amount of drug in your body is kept at a constant level. Therefore, take this drug at evenly spaced intervals. To help you remember, take it at the same time(s) each day.
It is very important to continue taking this medication (and other anti-seizure medications) exactly as prescribed by your doctor. Do not take more or less of this drug than prescribed or stop taking it (or other anti-seizure medicines) even for a short time unless directed to do so by your doctor. Skipping or changing your dose without approval from your doctor may cause seizure control to worsen, cause a very severe seizure that is difficult to treat (status epilepticus), or worsen side effects.
If you are taking this medication for anxiety, take it only when needed to get the most benefit from it. Phenobarbital will not work as well for anxiety if taken regularly for more than 2 weeks. Do not take more of this medication than prescribed. Doing so may increase side effects.
