Mycifradin Oral

Generic Name: NEOMYCIN TABLET - ORAL
Pronounced: (nee-oh-MY-sin)

Mycifradin Oral Uses

Neomycin tablets are used along with other medications to decrease normal bacteria in the intestines before intestinal surgery. Neomycin belongs to a class of drugs known as antibiotics. It works by killing certain bacteria in the intestines, thereby decreasing the risk of infection after surgery. Neomycin may also be used along with a special diet to treat a certain serious brain problem (hepatic encephalopathy). This condition is caused by too much of a certain natural substance (ammonia). Normally, the liver gets rid of ammonia, but liver disease can cause too much ammonia to remain in the body. This medication kills certain intestinal bacteria that make ammonia, thereby lowering ammonia levels and decreasing the encephalopathy.

How To Use Mycifradin Oral

Take this medication by mouth exactly as prescribed by your doctor. For use before intestine surgery, this medication may be taken with other antibiotics for 3 or 4 total doses on the day before surgery, or take as directed by your doctor.

For hepatic encephalopathy, take neomycin tablets usually 4 times daily or as directed by your doctor. It is used for the shortest treatment period possible, but it is usually taken for 5-6 days. You may need to use it for longer depending on the seriousness of your liver disease, but do not use for longer than prescribed by your doctor.

Dosage is based on your medical condition and response to treatment.

For hepatic encephalopathy, use this medication regularly to get the most benefit from it. To help you remember, take it at the same times each day.

Tell your doctor if your condition persists or worsens during treatment period.
