Zinx Cold Kit Oral

Generic Name: CARBETAPENTANE/PHENYLEPHRINE SUSPENSION W/ ZINC KIT - ORAL
Pronounced: (car-bait-TA-pen-tane/fen-ill-EFF-rin w/ zink)

Zinx Cold Kit Oral Uses

This combination product is used to temporarily treat cough and stuffy nose symptoms caused by the common cold, asthma, or other breathing illnesses (e.g., bronchitis). The suspension contains carbetapentane and phenylephrine. Carbetapentane is a cough suppressant that works by acting on a part of the brain (cough center) to reduce the urge to cough. Phenylephrine is a decongestant that works by reducing blood flow to the nose/sinuses, allowing the nasal passages to open up. The lozenges contain zinc. Zinc has been used to decrease the time and severity of symptoms of the common cold (e.g., sore throat, cough, stuffy nose). It works by stopping the growth of the virus that causes the common cold (rhinovirus).

The suspension should not be used in newborns. Do not use the suspension in children younger than 2 years unless specifically directed by the doctor. To decrease the risk for serious side effects, carefully follow all of the doctor's dosage directions. Do not give other cough or cold medication that might contain the same or similar ingredients (see also Drug Interactions section). Ask your doctor or pharmacist about other ways to relieve cough and cold symptoms (e.g., saline nose drops/spray, using a humidifier or infant nasal suction bulb).

The lozenges are not recommended for children younger than 6 years.

How To Use Zinx Cold Kit Oral

Shake the suspension well before each dose. Measure the medication with a dose-measuring spoon or device to make sure you get the correct dose. Do not use a household spoon. Take this medication by mouth with or without food, usually every 12 hours or as directed by your doctor.

Dosage of the suspension is based on your age, medical condition, and response to treatment. In a 24-hour period, adults and children older than 12 years should not take more than 20 milliliters (4 teaspoonfuls), children aged 6 to 12 years should not take more than 10 milliliters (2 teaspoonfuls), and children aged 2 to 6 years should not take more than 5 milliliters (1 teaspoonful).
