Zinx Congestion Kit Oral

Generic Name: GUAIFENESIN/PHENYLEPHRINE SUSTAINED-RELEASE W/ZINC KIT - ORAL
Pronounced: (gweye-FEN-eh-sin/fen-ill-EFF-rin with zink)

Zinx Congestion Kit Oral Uses

This combination product is used to temporarily treat cough, chest congestion, stuffy nose and other symptoms caused by the common cold, flu, or other breathing illnesses (e.g., bronchitis, sinusitis).

The sustained-release tablets contain guaifenesin and phenylephrine. Guaifenesin is an expectorant that helps to thin and loosen mucus in the lungs, making it easier to cough up the mucus. Phenylephrine is a decongestant that helps to relieve stuffy nose and sinus symptoms.

The lozenges contain zinc. Zinc has been used to decrease the time and severity of symptoms caused by the common cold (e.g., sore throat, cough, stuffy nose). It is thought to work by stopping the growth of the virus that causes the common cold (rhinovirus).

This product is not usually used for ongoing coughs from smoking or long-term breathing problems (e.g., chronic bronchitis, emphysema) unless directed by your doctor.

Do not use this product in children younger than 6 years unless specifically directed by the doctor. To decrease the risk for serious side effects, carefully follow all of the doctor's dosage directions. Do not give other cough and cold medication that might contain the same or similar ingredients (see also Drug Interactions section). Ask your doctor or pharmacist about other ways to relieve cough and cold symptoms (e.g., saline nose drops/spray, using a humidifier or infant nasal suction bulb).

How To Use Zinx Congestion Kit Oral

Take the sustained-release guaifenesin/phenylephrine tablets by mouth with or without food, usually twice daily or as directed by your doctor. Do not crush or chew the tablets. You may break the tablets in half if they have lines for breaking (scores). Drink plenty of fluids when you use this medication unless otherwise directed by your doctor. The fluid will help loosen the mucus in your lungs. This medication can be taken with food if stomach upset occurs.

For the zinc lozenges, slowly dissolve 2 lozenges in your mouth, one after the other, at the first sign of a cold (e.g., scratchy throat). Then slowly dissolve 1 lozenge in your mouth every 2 hours (with 1 lozenge at bedtime) until the cold symptoms have gone away for 6 hours. Do not use more than 10 lozenges in a 24-hour period. Do not eat or drink citrus fruit or juices within 30 minutes before or after using the zinc lozenges.

Dosage is based on your age, medical condition, and response to treatment.

Tell your doctor if your condition persists for more than 1 week, if it worsens, or if it occurs with fever, rash, or persistent headache. These may be symptoms of a serious medical problem and should be checked by a doctor.
