Ilosone Oral Warning
Erythromycin estolate may cause liver problems. This medication must not be used if you already have liver problems. Stop using this drug and notify your doctor immediately if you develop: nausea, vomiting, dark urine, yellowing of the eyes or skin, fever, severe stomach/abdominal pain, unusual fatigue.
Ilosone Oral Side Effects
May cause stomach upset, diarrhea, loss of appetite, nausea, vomiting and stomach cramps the first few days as your body adjusts to the medication. If these symptoms persist or become severe, inform your doctor.
In addition to the above side effects, erythromycin estolate rarely causes dark urine, pale stools, severe stomach pain, unusual tiredness and weakness or yellow eyes and skin. Be sure to contact your doctor if these symptoms should occur.
Remember that your doctor has prescribed this medication because the benefit to you is greater than the risk of side effects. Many people using this medication do not have serious side effects.
Tell your doctor immediately if any of these rare but very serious side effects occur:
- fainting
- fast/irregular heartbeat
- hearing problems (e.g., hearing loss)
In the unlikely event you have an allergic reaction to this drug, seek medical attention immediately. Symptoms of an allergic reaction include:
- rash
- itching
- swelling
- dizziness
- trouble breathing
If you notice other effects not listed above, contact your doctor or pharmacist.
Ilosone Oral Precautions
Before taking erythromycin estolate, tell your doctor or pharmacist if you are allergic to it; or if you have any other allergies.
Tell your doctor your medical history, especially of:
- liver disease/jaundice
Use of this medication for prolonged or repeated periods may result in a secondary infection (e.g., oral, bladder or vaginal yeast infection)
Caution is advised when using this drug in the elderly because they may be more sensitive to its side effects, especially hearing loss and irregular heartbeat.
