Demerol Inj

Generic Name: MEPERIDINE - INJECTION
Pronounced: (meh-PAIR-eh-deen)

Demerol Inj Uses

This medication is used to treat moderate to severe pain. It is also used before and during surgery or other procedures with other types of pain medication. Meperidine acts on certain centers in the brain to give you pain relief. This medication is a narcotic pain reliever similar to morphine.

How To Use Demerol Inj

Inject this medication into a vein, into a muscle, or under the skin as directed by your doctor. When meperidine is injected into a vein, it is best to mix it with other IV fluids and give it very slowly to prevent serious side effects. Carefully follow all instructions for proper mixing with correct IV fluids. Ask your pharmacist before mixing with other medications in the same injection or solution. If you have any questions about the use of this medication, consult your doctor or pharmacist.

Before using, check this product visually for particles or discoloration. If either is present, do not use the liquid. Clean the injection site properly before use. If this medication is given into a muscle or under the skin, it is important to change the location of the injection site to avoid developing problem areas under the skin.

The dosage is based on your medical condition and response to therapy. The usual maximum dose in adults is 600 milligrams in 24 hours. This drug is usually not used for longer than 48 hours. Pain medications work best if they are used as the first signs of pain occur. If you wait until the pain has worsened, the medication may not work as well. You should be lying down when the injection is given to prevent side effects such as dizziness.

If nausea occurs, consult your doctor or pharmacist for ways to decrease it (e.g., antihistamines, lying down with as little head movement as possible).

This medication may cause withdrawal reactions, especially if it has been used regularly for a long time or in high doses. In such cases, withdrawal symptoms (such as restlessness, runny nose, watering eyes, trouble sleeping, severe abdominal/muscle pain, nausea, vomiting, rapid breathing, and fast heartbeat) may occur if you suddenly stop using this medication. To prevent withdrawal reactions, your doctor may reduce your dose gradually. Consult your doctor or pharmacist for more details, and report any withdrawal reactions immediately.
