Docosanol Top

Generic Name: DOCOSANOL - TOPICAL
Pronounced: (doe-COE-sah-noll)

Docosanol Top Uses

This medication is used to treat cold sores (also called fever blisters) on the face/lips. It shortens the healing time and helps the symptoms (e.g., tingling, pain, burning, itching) to go away faster. It works by blocking the virus that causes the cold sores (herpes simplex) from entering the healthy skin cells and growing in number.

Do not use this medication to treat canker sores (sores found commonly in the mouth), shingles, or genital herpes.

How To Use Docosanol Top

Use this medication at the first signs of a cold sore (e.g., tingling, burning). Wash your hands before applying this medication. Apply a thin layer of the medication to the affected area and rub in gently but completely, usually 5 times daily as directed on the product package or as directed by your doctor. Wash your hands after using the medication. If you are uncertain about any of the information, consult your doctor or pharmacist.

Do not apply this medication in the mouth or in/around the eyes. If you do get the medication in those areas, flush with plenty of water.

Use this medication regularly to get the most benefit from it. To help you remember, use it at the same times each day until the cold sore heals.

Tell your doctor if your condition worsens or persists for more than 10 days.
