Colposcopy

WHAT YOU SHOULD KNOW

During a colposcopy (kol-POS-kuh-pea), your doctor uses an instrument called a colposcope (KOL-po-scope) to examine your cervix and vagina. The colposcope magnifies the area to give the doctor a detailed view. The test is usually done when your Pap smear shows some possible problems. The doctor may take a small piece of tissue (biopsy) from your cervix or vagina to be tested.

After the Exam

  • If a biopsy sample was taken, you may have slight vaginal bleeding or spotting for a couple of hours. Wear a sanitary pad or use a tampon until the bleeding stops.
  • Do not have sex until your doctor gives you the go-ahead.
  • If your doctor does not call you, call him or her to get the results of your tests. They should be ready in a few days.

Call Your Doctor If...

  • You have bleeding from your vagina for several days.
