Bartholin's (BAR-tul-ins) glands
are two small glands in the folds of skin that cover the
opening of the vagina. Occasionally a cyst, or fluid-filled
sac, develops in one of the glands or the tube leading to it.
The fluid inside this cyst may become infected.
Care
The doctor will open the cyst and drain
it.
WHAT YOU SHOULD DO
A small piece of gauze is left over the area so that
it can continue to drain. Do not remove the gauze until the
doctor says it's okay.
Put warm, moist towels on the area or sit in a tub of
warm water. This helps ease the pain and discomfort. Do
this for 10 to 20 minutes several times a
day.
You may want to use a panty liner to keep from
staining your underwear.
Call Your Doctor If...
You have pain, redness, swelling, drainage, or
bleeding in the area of the cyst and it is getting
worse.
You have tenderness or pain in the folds of skin
around your vagina (the labia), you have pain with sex, or
your labia are swollen.
