Cervicitis
WHAT YOU SHOULD
KNOW
Cervicitis (sir-vi-SIGH-tis) is swelling and irritation
of the cervix (the bottom part of the uterus). It is a common
female problem, and is usually not serious. Treatment depends
on the cause.
Causes
Often the cause of cervicitis is
an infection acquired while having sex. An IUD (intrauterine
device) or a forgotten tampon is sometimes at fault. Chemicals
in douches also can cause the problem.
Signs/Symptoms
Yellow discharge from the vagina
that may or may not have a bad smell is frequently a symptom.
Others include bleeding, itching, pain during sex, or a burning
feeling when you urinate. You may have belly or lower back
pain.
Care
If the cause is an infection, the
doctor will prescribe antibiotic medicine to eliminate the
germs. Your partner(s) may also need to be
treated.
WHAT YOU SHOULD DO
-
If you have an infection:
-
Be sure to take the prescribed medication for as
long as directed. If the germs aren't completely
eliminated, the infection may spread up into the pelvic
area. This can cause damage that may make it hard for you
to get pregnant.
-
Your sexual partner(s) must be examined and
treated.
-
Don't have sex while you are being
treated.
-
During treatment, use sanitary pads instead of
tampons.
-
Do not use a douche during
treatment.
Call Your Doctor If...
-
Your discomfort lasts longer than a few
days.
-
Your symptoms get worse.
-
During or after treatment, you have vaginal bleeding
between periods.
