Round Ligament Pain

WHAT YOU SHOULD KNOW

Round ligaments on each side of the uterus attach it to the abdomen and hold it in place. During pregnancy, the uterus gets bigger to make room for the growing baby. This puts strain on the round ligaments and may cause pain. The problem is not serious. It is a normal part of pregnancy.

Causes

Stretching of the round ligaments during pregnancy.

Signs/Symptoms

Pain on one or both sides of your abdomen, usually in the lower part.

Care

Lie on the sore side to help relieve the pain.

WHAT YOU SHOULD DO

  • Don't worry. Nothing is wrong. This is a normal part of pregnancy. It will not hurt your baby.

Call Your Doctor If...

  • The pain in your abdomen changes.

Seek Care Immediately If...

  • The pain in your abdomen gets worse.
  • You have any discharge from your vagina such as blood or a watery liquid.
