Separated Shoulder
WHAT YOU SHOULD
KNOW
This problem occurs when an accident forces the shoulder
and collar bones out of position. The connecting tissue that
normally holds the bones in place is stretched or torn, causing
these bones to separate. The injury is known medically as
acromioclavicular (a-kro-MY-oh-kla-VIC-ku-lar)
separation.
Causes
Separation is usually the result
of falling on your shoulder or receiving a strong blow to your
upper body.
Signs/Symptoms
You can expect to feel pain,
swelling, stiffness, or numbness. You may have problems moving
the arm on the side that is injured.
Care
You will need to keep the
affected arm in a sling for several weeks. Ice packs, heat, and
medications can be used to relieve the pain.
WHAT YOU SHOULD DO
-
Apply ice to the injury for 15 to 20 minutes each
hour for the first 1 to 2 days. Put the ice in a plastic
bag and place a towel between the bag of ice and your
skin.
-
After the first 1 to 2 days, you may apply heat to
the injury to help relieve pain. You may use a heating pad
set on ""low,'' a whirlpool bath, or warm, moist towels.
Apply the heat for 15 to 20 minutes every hour for 48
hours.
-
Wear your sling constantly for several weeks (your
doctor will tell you how long). If you remove the sling to
dress or bathe, be sure to keep your arm in the same
position as it is when the sling is on. Do not lift your
arm.
-
You may use over-the-counter medicines such as
acetaminophen or ibuprofen. Take all medications exactly as
directed by your doctor.
Call Your Doctor If...
-
You have more pain or swelling from the
injury.
Seek Care Immediately If...
-
Your arm becomes numb, pale, or
cold.
