A bruise in the area of the tail bone, or coccyx, is
usually not serious, though it may make it painful to sit or to
walk.
Causes
The injury is usually the result
of a fall or an accident.
Signs/Symptoms
There will be pain or bruising.
It may hurt to have a bowel movement.
Care
There is no treatment other than
measures to relieve the pain.
WHAT YOU SHOULD DO
Apply ice to the sore area for 15 to 20 minutes each
hour for the first 1 to 2 days. Put the ice in a plastic
bag and place a towel between the bag of ice and your
skin.
After the first 1 to 2 days, you may apply heat to
the injury to help relieve pain. Use a warm heating pad
(set on low), whirlpool bath, or warm, moist towels for 15
to 20 minutes every hour for 48 hours. Lie on your stomach,
DO NOT lie on the heating pad.
Sitting on a large rubber ring or a cushion may ease
the pain. Some people feel more comfortable sitting on a
hard surface.
You may increase your activity as the pain
allows.
You may use over-the-counter medicines to ease the
pain. Take stool softeners if bowel movements are painful.
Take all medications exactly as directed by your
doctor.
