Nosebleeds
WHAT YOU SHOULD
KNOW
Nosebleeds, known medically as epistaxis (epi-STAX-sis),
are more common in children than in
adults.
Causes
The problem can result from
excessive dryness of the inside of the nose, an infection, or
an injury. Other causes include high blood pressure, kidney or
liver disease, or generalized bleeding problems.
Signs/Symptoms
Blood from the nose can be either
dark or bright in color. If you lose a large amount of blood,
you may become dizzy. If you swallow blood, your stools may
turn black.
Care
To stop severe nosebleeds, the
doctor will insert gauze packing high in the nose. If the
bleeding won't stop, you may need to be hospitalized for tests
and care.
WHAT YOU SHOULD DO
-
You will need to return to the doctor to have the
gauze packing removed. If part of the packing starts to
come out of the nostril, either cut it off or gently tuck
it back in. Do not pull it out.
-
If there is no packing in your nose, apply a small
amount of petroleum jelly inside the nostril 2 times a day
for 4 or 5 days. This will help relieve dryness and
irritation.
-
To avoid loosening any blood clots, do not blow your
nose for 12 hours after the bleeding stops Do not pick your
nose or put anything into it.
-
If the bleeding starts again, sit up and lean
forward. Breathe through your mouth. Pinch the soft part of
your nose tightly and for 10 minutes without letting
go.
-
Use a cool-mist humidifier or vaporizer in your home;
the increased moisture will help prevent
nosebleeds.
-
For a few days, keep your head on several pillows
when lying down.
-
To prevent the bleeding from starting again, do not
use aspirin or drink alcohol for 2 or 3 days. You should
also avoid hot drinks for several
days.
-
Avoid heavy lifting and straining for several
days.
-
You may resume your normal activities as soon as you
feel better.
Call Your Doctor If...
-
You have unexplained bruises on other parts of the
body.
-
You develop a high temperature.
-
You continue to have frequent
nosebleeds.
-
You become nauseated or vomit.
Seek Care Immediately If...
-
You cannot stop the bleeding after applying pressure
to your nose for 10 minutes.
-
You lose large amounts of blood.
