Labyrinthitis (LAB-uh-rin-THIE-tis) is an inflammation of
the inner ear canal that helps you control your balance.
Labyrinthitis is not a serious illness and produces no
long-term problems. With treatment, the problem should clear up
in 1 to 6 weeks.
Causes
Labyrinthitis is usually caused
by a viral infection. Other causes include bacterial infection,
head injury, allergies, and certain medicines. Sometimes no
cause can be found.
Signs/Symptoms
The signature symptom is
dizziness (vertigo) that gets worse when you move your head.
You may have a spinning sensation, feel nauseated, hear ringing
in your ears, or suffer hearing loss. You may not be able to
control the movement of your eyes, and your balance may be
affected.
Care
Resting quietly may help. For
some infections, the doctor may prescribe antibiotics. For
stubborn cases, surgery may be needed.
WHAT YOU SHOULD DO
Rest in bed. Keep your head as still as possible
until the dizziness clears up. Walk with help until you are
sure you can walk without falling. Slowly resume your
normal activities.
Reduce your salt and fluid intake. Do not add extra
salt to foods. Avoid carbonated beverages that contain
sodium.
Stay at home and do not drive or work around
machinery until the dizziness
disappears.
Call Your Doctor If...
You develop a high temperature.
You notice decreased hearing in either
ear.
You develop vomiting that will not
stop.
You have new or unexplained symptoms that may be
caused by your medicine.
