Low-Salicylate Diet

WHAT YOU SHOULD KNOW

Salicylate, the main ingredient in aspirin, is also found in certain foods. If you are allergic to aspirin or your doctor thinks you have a food allergy, he may recommend a low-salicylate diet.

WHAT YOU SHOULD DO

Do not take any medicine that contains aspirin. Avoid foods you suspect you may be allergic to. You may eat meat, milk, and other dairy products, but you should not eat the foods listed below.

  • Wine

VEGETABLES to Avoid

  • Cucumbers
  • Green peppers
  • Tabasco peppers
  • Tomatoes

DESSERTS and SWEETS to Avoid

  • Mint or wintergreen products (such as mint candy or peppermint sticks)
  • Pies and cakes made with fruits listed above

BREADS and STARCHES to Avoid

  • Potatoes

OTHER ITEMS to Avoid

  • Almonds
  • Cloves
  • Pickles
  • Vinegar
