Soft Diet

WHAT YOU SHOULD KNOW

If you have problems chewing or swallowing, your doctor may recommend a soft diet.

WHAT YOU SHOULD DO

Choose foods from the list below. Avoid any food you find hard to chew. To make a food easier to chew and swallow, you can grind or purée it with a blender or food processor. You may use fats, such as oils, butter, or margarine.

MEATS and PROTEIN

(Eat 2 to 4 servings a day from this list.)
  • 2 ounces cheese (in sauces or melted in other dishes)
  • 1/2 cup cottage, cream, or ricotta cheese
  • 3 ounces meat, fish, or poultry (with gravy to moisten), ground, chopped, or cut in small cubes
  • 2 tablespoons smooth peanut butter
  • 2 eggs, soft-cooked or scrambled

DAIRY

(Eat 2 to 4 servings a day from this list.)
  • 1/2 cup ice cream or ice milk without fruit or nuts
  • 1 cup milk and milk drinks
  • 1 cup milkshake
  • 1 cup yogurt (plain or with soft fruits)

STARCHES

(Eat 6 to 11 servings a day from this list. The foods should not contain nuts, seeds, or dried fruits.)
  • 1/2 cup cooked cereal
  • 6 small or 3 large saltine crackers (softened in soup or other liquids)
  • 1/2 cup macaroni, pasta, or noodles
  • 1/2 cup mashed or cooked potatoes without skins
  • 1/2 to 1 cup plain dry cereal in milk
  • 1/2 cup cooked rice or barley
  • 1 slice soft bread
  • 1 roll, muffin, pancake, or waffle

SOUPS

(Eat up to 2 servings a day from this list.)
  • 1 cup broth or bouillon
  • 1 cup cream soup with soft vegetables
  • 1 cup pureed or blended soups

VEGETABLES

(Eat 3 to 5 servings a day from this list.)
  • 1/2 cup vegetable juice (such as tomato or V-8®)
  • 1/2 cup soft, well cooked vegetables without seeds or skins

FRUITS

(Eat 2 to 4 servings a day from this list.)
  • 1/2 cup fruit juice
  • 1/2 cup applesauce
  • 1/2 cup cooked or canned fruit without seeds or skins
  • 1/2 ripe banana

BEVERAGES

(Drink 2 to 4 servings a day from this list. One cup is the same as 8 ounces.)
  • 1 cup coffee or tea
  • 1 cup hot cocoa
  • 1 cup soda pop
  • 1 cup milk
  • Water (Drink 6 to 8 soda pop can size glasses a day.)

DESSERTS and SWEETS

(Eat 1 to 2 servings a day from this list. The foods should not contain nuts, seeds, or whole fruits.)
  • 1/2 cup custard
  • 1 whole frozen juice pop or Popsicle®
  • 1 tablespoon honey
  • 1/2 cup pudding
  • 1 piece of pastry (such as sweet roll)
  • 2 inch (5.08 cm) pie-shaped slice or 3 inch (7.62 cm) square piece of cake
  • 3 inch size cookie
  • 1 teaspoon sugar or sugar substitute
  • 1 tablespoon pancake syrup (such as maple syrup)

FATS

(Eat 2 to 3 servings a day from this list.)
  • 1 teaspoon butter
  • 1 teaspoon margarine
  • 1 teaspoon oil (corn, olive, safflower, vegetable, or any other kind)
  • 1 tablespoon salad dressing
  • 1/2 cup strained gravy
  • 2 tablespoons whipped topping
