Nail Removal

WHAT YOU SHOULD KNOW

All or part of your finger or toenail may need to be removed because of injury, nail infection, or abnormal nail growth. After the procedure, your finger or toe will be tightly wrapped in a special nonstick bandage to prevent bleeding.

WHAT YOU SHOULD DO

  • Keep your hand or foot elevated to reduce pain and swelling.
  • Your doctor will tell you whether it is necessary to return to the hospital or the office to have your bandage changed or whether you can do it at home.
  • Keep your bandage dry until after it is changed for the first time.
  • After your bandage is changed for the first time, soak your hand or foot in warm water for 10 to 20 minutes 4 times a day to help reduce pain and swelling. If you wish, you may add Epsom salt to the water. After soaking your hand or foot, apply a clean, dry bandage. Change your bandage every time it gets wet or dirty.

Call Your Doctor If...

  • You have increased pain, swelling, drainage or bleeding.
  • You develop a temperature of greater than 101 degrees F (38.3 degrees C).
