Scoliosis

WHAT YOU SHOULD KNOW

Scoliosis (SKO-lee-O-sis) is a sideways curvature of the spine most commonly found among teenage girls. The condition is painless, but may cause twisting of the shoulders, hips, chest, back, and rib cage.

Causes

Scoliosis may result from a birth defect, poor posture, uneven leg length, or polio. It tends to run in families. In most cases, no specific cause can be found.

Signs/Symptoms

There are usually no early warning signs. Later, back pain and curving of the upper body may appear, and the back may become S-shaped. Other signs include a sunken chest, uneven hips and shoulders, and rounded shoulders.

Care

You may need physical therapy to strengthen your back muscles; and your doctor may suggest you wear a back brace or a shoe lift. In severe cases, surgery may be necessary to correct the condition.

WHAT YOU SHOULD DO

  • It may not be advisable to participate in sports activities. Check with your doctor beforehand.
  • Scoliosis can be corrected if treated early. You'll need to follow your doctor's program very carefully, however, and make it to all follow-up appointments.

Call Your Doctor If...

  • You develop back pain that is not relieved by aspirin or other nonprescription pain relievers.
