WHAT YOU SHOULD
KNOW
A dermoid cyst is a sac filled with gas, liquid, or a
jelly-like material that develops on the skin of the face,
scalp, neck, or trunk. The cyst may remain small for years or
slowly grow larger. Although such cysts are not dangerous, it
may eventually need to be removed (excised) by a
doctor.
WHAT YOU SHOULD DO
-
After the removal, keep your bandage clean and dry.
You may change it after 24 hours. If it sticks, use warm
water to gently loosen it. Pat the area dry with a clean
towel before putting on another
bandage.
-
If possible, keep the area where the cyst was removed
raised. This will relieve soreness and swelling and promote
healing.
-
If you have stitches, keep them dry for 24 hours.
After that time, you may clean them gently with a cotton
swab dipped in a mixture of half water and half hydrogen
peroxide.
-
Do not go swimming or soak the area where the cyst
was removed.
-
Do not bump or overuse the area where the cyst was
removed.
Call Your Doctor If...
-
You develop a temperature of over 100.4 degrees F (38
degrees C).
-
Blood continues to soak through the
bandage.
-
Pain in the area of the removal grows
worse.
-
You notice redness, swelling, pus, a bad smell, or
red streaks leading from the stitches. These are signs of
infection.
