Fever in Adults

WHAT YOU SHOULD KNOW

You have a fever if your body temperature, taken by mouth, is over 99.5 degrees Fahrenheit (37.5 degrees Centigrade). Running a fever is a sign that your body is fighting an infection. In most cases, it is not a sign of a life-threatening illness.

Causes

Fever is typically associated with a viral infection such as a cold or flu. Certain other infections and diseases also cause fever.

Signs/Symptoms

Typical symptoms include a reddened face, warm forehead, body chills, and sweating. You may feel hot and may be tired.

WHAT YOU SHOULD DO

  • To reduce your fever:
    • You may use aspirin, acetaminophen, or ibuprofen.
    • Place a cold compress under your arm or on the back of your neck, or sponge off with lukewarm water.
  • You may feel better if you decrease your activity or rest in bed.
  • Drink an 8-ounce glass of water every hour while you are awake.

Call Your Doctor If...

  • Your fever lasts more than 3 or 4 days.
  • You notice any new symptoms.

Seek Care Immediately If...

  • You develop a very high temperature.
