Overview
- About Actonel
Arthritis of the joints (primarily in the jaw) has been reported in patients taking Actonel. If you experience jaw pain, contact your doctor or dentist.
Actonel may cause bone, joint, and/or muscle pain. If you develop these symptoms, talk to your doctor. Most pain stops when the drug is discontinued, but don't stop taking it without consulting your doctor first.
Possible food and drug interactions when taking Actonel
Return to topIf Actonel is taken with certain other drugs, the effects of either could be increased, decreased, or altered. It is especially important to check with your doctor before combining Actonel with the following:
- Antacids
- Calcium supplements
- Laxatives such as magnesium hydroxide
- Antibiotics such as ciprofloxacin and tetracycline
- Iron supplements
- Osteoporosis drugs known as bisphosphonates, such as Actonel
- Steroid medications
- Thiazide diuretics
- Thyroid hormones
Calcium tablets such as those found in Actonel With Calcium may interfere with or be affected by the following:
Special information if you are pregnant or breastfeeding
Return to topActonel has caused harm when tested on pregnant animals. It is not recommended during human pregnancy unless its benefits are judged to outweigh the potential risks. If you are pregnant or plan to become pregnant, notify your doctor immediately.
If you are nursing a baby, you'll need to choose between discontinuing nursing or discontinuing the drug.
Recommended dosage for Actonel

Osteoporosis
For the prevention and treatment of osteoporosis, the recommended dose is one 5-milligram tablet once daily or one 35-milligram tablet once a week. If you are taking Actonel With Calcium, the dose is one 35-milligram tablet taken once a week, and one calcium tablet taken each of the remaining six days of the week.
Steroid-Induced Osteoporosis
For treatment or prevention of steroid-induced osteoporosis, the recommended dose is one 5-milligram tablet once a day.
Paget's Disease
The recommended dose for Paget's disease is 30 milligrams once a day for two months. A second 2-month course of therapy may be required in certain individuals.
Overdosage
Return to topA large overdose of Actonel can dramatically reduce calcium levels in the blood. Warning signs include a tingling sensation and spasms. If you suspect an overdose, seek medical attention immediately.
