Why is Denavir prescribed?
ADenavir cream is used to treat recurrent cold sores on the lips and face. It works by interfering with the growth of the herpesvirus responsible for the sores.
Most important fact about Denavir
You should begin applying Denavir at the first hint of a developing cold sore. The drug will not cure herpes, but it will reduce pain and may speed healing.
How should you take Denavir?
Avoid using Denavir cream in or near the eyes; it can irritate them. Apply it only to sores on the lips and face.

Apply it as soon as you remember. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the one you missed and go back to your regular schedule.

Store at room temperature; avoid freezing.
What side effects may occur?
Reactions to Denavir are quite rare. If any develop or change in intensity, inform your doctor as soon as possible. Only your doctor can determine if it is safe for you to continue using this medication.

Side effects may include:
Headache, hives, itching, numbing of the skin, pain, rash, skin discoloration, skin reaction or swelling where the cream was applied, swelling in the mouth and throat, taste or smell alteration, tingling, worsened condition

If you have ever had an allergic reaction to any of the ingredients in Denavir, you should not use this medication.
Special warnings about Denavir
It is not known whether Denavir is effective for people with weak immune systems.
Possible food and drug interactions when taking Denavir
No interactions with Denavir cream have been reported.
Special information if you are pregnant or breastfeeding
The effects of Denavir during pregnancy have not been adequately studied. If you are pregnant or plan to become pregnant, inform your doctor immediately. Researchers do not know whether this drug will appear in breast milk after external application. For safety's sake, your doctor may advise you to discontinue breastfeeding your baby until your treatment with Denavir is finished.
Recommended dosage
ADULTS
Apply cream every 2 hours, while awake, for 4 days.
CHILDREN
The safety and effectiveness of this drug in children have not been established.
Overdosage
There have been no reported overdoses of this medication. Even if the cream is accidentally swallowed, it is unlikely to cause a harmful reaction.
