Why is Monurol prescribed?

Monurol is an antibiotic used to treat bladder infections (cystitis) in women.

Most important fact about Monurol

You need take only one dose of Monurol. Additional doses won't speed a cure, but will make side effects more likely. If your symptoms do not improve in 2 to 3 days, contact your physician.

How should you take Monurol?

Monurol is packaged in a sachet, which contains granules of the drug. Open the sachet and pour the contents in 3 or 4 ounces (half a cup) of cold water, stir to dissolve, and drink immediately. Do not use hot water. Do not take the drug in its dry form. The solution can be taken with or without food.

What side effects may occur?

Side effects cannot be anticipated. If any develop or change in intensity, inform your doctor as soon as possible. Only your doctor can determine if it is safe for you to continue taking Monurol.

• More common side effects may include:
  Diarrhea, headache, nausea, vaginal inflammation, dizziness, indigestion, weakness

Why should Monurol not be prescribed?

If you have an allergic reaction to Monurol, avoid it in the future. The drug is used only for bladder infections, not for infections of the kidney (pyelonephritis).

Special warnings about Monurol

Call your doctor if symptoms fail to improve within 2 to 3 days. You may need a different prescription.

Possible food and drug interactions when taking Monurol

Check with your doctor before combining Monurol with metoclopramide, a drug that speeds digestion. Metoclopramide and similar drugs will reduce Monurol's effectiveness.

Special information if you are pregnant or breastfeeding

There have been no adequate studies in pregnant women; and it is not known whether Monurol appears in breast milk. If you are pregnant or plan to become pregnant, make sure the doctor is aware of it.

Recommended dosage for Monurol

ADULTS

The usual dose for women 18 years and older is 1 sachet (3 grams) dissolved in water.

CHILDREN

Safety and effectiveness have not been established in children 12 and under.

Overdosage

No Monurol overdoses have been reported. However, any medication taken in excess can have serious consequences. If you suspect an overdose, seek medical treatment immediately.
