Possible food and drug interactions when taking Phenergan with Codeine

Phenergan with Codeine may increase the effects of alcohol. Do not drink alcohol, or at least substantially reduce the amount you drink, while taking this medication.

If Phenergan with Codeine is taken with certain other drugs, the effects of either could be increased, decreased, or altered. It is especially important to check with your doctor before combining Phenergan with Codeine with the following:

All antidepressant drugs, including Marplan, Nardil, Elavil and Prozac
Narcotic pain relievers such as Demerol and Dilaudid
Sedatives such as Seconal, Halcion and Dalmane
Tranquilizers such as Xanax and Valium


Special information if you are pregnant or breastfeeding

The effects of Phenergan with Codeine during pregnancy have not been adequately studied. If you are pregnant or plan to become pregnant, inform your doctor immediately. Phenergan with Codeine may appear in breast milk and may affect a nursing infant. If this medication is essential to your health, your doctor may advise you to discontinue breastfeeding until your treatment is finished.


Recommended dosage

ADULTS


The usual dosage is 1 teaspoon (5 milliliters) every 4 to 6 hours, not to exceed 6 teaspoons, or 30 milliliters, in 24 hours.

CHILDREN 6 YEARS TO UNDER 12 YEARS


The usual dose is one-half to 1 teaspoon (2.5 to 5 milliliters) every 4 to 6 hours, not to exceed 6 teaspoons, or 30 milliliters, in 24 hours.

CHILDREN UNDER 6 YEARS


The usual dose is one-quarter to one-half teaspoon (1.25 to 2.5 milliliters) every 4 to 6 hours. The total daily dose should not exceed 9 milliliters for children weighing 40 pounds, 8 milliliters for 35 pounds, 7 milliliters for 30 pounds, and 6 milliliters for 25 pounds.

Phenergan with Codeine is not recommended for children under 2 years of age.


Overdosage

Any medication taken in excess can have serious consequences. An overdose of codeine can be fatal. If you suspect an overdose, seek medical treatment immediately.

  • Symptoms of an overdose of Phenergan with Codeine may include:
    Bluish skin, cold, clammy skin, coma, convulsions, difficulty breathing, dilated pupils, dry mouth, extreme sleepiness, flushing, low blood pressure, muscle softness, nightmares, overexcitability, slow heartbeat, small pupils, stomach and intestinal problems, stupor, unconsciousness
