Ru-Tuss is an antihistamine/decongestant that relieves the runny, stuffy nose, nasal drip, itching, watery eyes, and scratchy, itchy throat caused by allergies, colds, and other irritations of the sinus, nose, and upper respiratory tract. Chlorpheniramine, the antihistamine, relieves watery eyes, dries up post-nasal drip, and reduces sneezing. Phenylephrine and phenylpropanolamine combine to reduce congestion and make breathing easier. Hyoscyamine, atropine, and scopolamine, commonly called belladonna alkaloids, enhance the drying effects of Ru-Tuss.

Ru-Tuss tablets may cause drowsiness. Do not drive, operate machinery or participate in any hazardous activity that requires full mental alertness until you know how you react to this medication.


How should you take this medication?

Take this medication exactly as prescribed. The tablets act continuously for 10 to 12 hours. Tablets should be swallowed whole, not crushed or chewed.

If this medicine dries out your mouth, sucking on hard candy or chewing gum may help.

--If you miss a dose...

Take it as soon as you remember. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the one you missed and go back to your regular schedule. Never take 2 doses at the same time.

What side effects may occur?

Side effects cannot be anticipated. If any develop or change in intensity, inform your doctor as soon as possible. Only your doctor can determine if it is safe for you to continue taking Ru-Tuss.

  • Side effects may include:
    Allergic reactions (rash, hives), blood disorders, blurred vision, constipation, diarrhea, difficulty sleeping (insomnia), dilated pupils, dizziness, drowsiness, dry mouth, dry nose and other mucous membranes, exhaustion, faintness, frequent urination, giddiness, headache, hyperirritability, increased chest congestion, itching, lack of coordination, loss of appetite, low blood pressure/high blood pressure, nausea, nervousness, painful or difficult urination, pounding heartbeat, rapid heartbeat, ringing in the ears, stomach upset, tightness in the chest, vision changes, vomiting

Ru-Tuss should be avoided if you are pregnant, if you are sensitive to or have ever had an allergic reaction to antihistamines or any of the ingredients in this medication, if you have glaucoma or bronchial asthma, or if you are taking antidepressant drugs known as MAO inhibitors (Nardil, for example). Ru-Tuss should not be given to children under 12 years of age.

This medication can make you feel drowsy. Be careful driving, operating machinery, or using appliances.

Ru-Tuss should be used with care if you have a bladder obstruction, high blood pressure, cardiovascular disease, or an overactive thyroid.


Possible food and drug interactions when taking this medication

Ru-Tuss may increase the effects of alcohol. Do not drink alcohol while taking this medication.

Do not take Ru-Tuss while taking antidepressant drugs such as Nardil and Parnate.

If Ru-Tuss is taken with certain other drugs, the effects of either could be increased, decreased, or altered. It is especially important to check with your doctor before combining Ru-Tuss with the following:

Sleep medications such as Halcion and Dalmane
Tranquilizers such as Xanax and Valium


Special information if you are pregnant or breastfeeding

Ru-Tuss is not recommended for use by pregnant women. If you are pregnant or plan to become pregnant, notify your doctor immediately.


Recommended dosage

ADULTS AND CHILDREN 12 YEARS OR OLDER


The usual dosage is 1 tablet in the morning and 1 tablet in the evening. This drug is not recommended for children under 12.

Overdosage

Any medication taken in excess can have serious consequences. Convulsions and death may occur from antihistamine overdose in children and infants. If you suspect an overdose, seek medical treatment immediately.

  • Symptoms of Ru-Tuss overdose may include:
    Coma, delirium, fever, rapid breathing, respiratory failure, stupor
